Song Memorial Forest Management Walk

What options does a woodlot owner have in the wake of a major storm or other event that affects a lot of their trees?

Please join us on a tour of a recent forest management conducted on the 83-acre Song Memorial Forest, a Mount Grace Conservation Area in Warwick. In October 2019, a powerful windstorm impacted the Orange-Warwick region, including Song Memorial Forest.

Our forester, Mike Mauri, will discuss Mount Grace’s thought process in responding to the storm, and will show the different management approaches that we used to sustain and promote overall biodiversity, stimulate the growth of both young and old trees, and generate timber income as part of an ongoing system of sustainable timber production. Both active (logging) and passive (no-cut) approaches were combined in this project. Mike will also discuss how these steps are intended to promote a diverse and complex forest that can play its part in a broader response to the threat of climate change.

Please wear appropriate footwear and you can direct any questions to Stewardship Manager KimLynn Nguyen. Following COVID-19 guidelines, face masks are required and participants are asked to maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet from other attendees.
