Location: We’ll gather along S Athol Road in Orange, MA, just north of the intersection with Waite Road. Coordinates: 42.5326187, -72.2541397.
Please park safely along the side of the road, being mindful of traffic and driveways. After parking, walk north along the road until you see our group of Mount Grace staff wearing reflective vests and carrying flashlights—we’ll be easy to spot!
Description: Each spring, on the warm, rainy nights when temperatures rise above 40*F and the ground has thawed, amphibians begin their annual migration to Vernal Pools for breeding; this is known as Big Night. Species such as Wood frogs, Spotted salamanders, and Spring peepers may travel hundreds of feet across roads and forests to reach their breeding site.
Because this migration is entirely weather dependent, we couldn’t set set a date in advance.
Volunteers will help observe and document migrating amphibians and assist them safely across roads when necessary. This is a unique opportunity to witness one of the most exciting natural events of spring!
Contact: To RSVP, please email Delana Gonzales at gonzales@mountgrace.org. Please text or Call Delana at 561-542-1874 if you have trouble finding us at the meet-up location.
