Big Night: Amphibian Migration Volunteer Event

Event date: Monday, March 9, 2026
EventsNews

Location: Athol or Orange, MA (specific meeting location shared via email)

Date: Weather dependent (March-April)

Time: Evening (after dark; exact time announced when conditions align)

Each spring, on the warm, rainy nights when temperatures rise above 40*F and the ground has thawed, amphibians begin their annual migration to Vernal Pools for breeding; this is known as Big Night. Species such as Wood frogs, Spotted salamanders, and Spring peepers may travel hundreds of feet across roads and forests to reach their breeding site.

Because this migration is entirely weather dependent, we cannot set a date in advance. Instead, interested volunteers can RSVP via email to join our alert list. When favorable conditions appear in the forecast, we will send an alert email with final details and the meeting location in Orange or Athol.

Volunteers will help observe and document migrating amphibians and assist them safely across roads when necessary. This is a unique opportunity to witness one of the most exciting natural events of spring!

What to Bring: Rain jacket, Headlamp/Flashlight, and a Positive attitude

All ages are welcome; minors must be accompanied by an adult

RSVP: Please email Delana at gonzales@ mountgrace.org to rsvp or with any questions
